The Garden at Moorfield Journal: 37
How to build a garden on the smell of an oily rag: Traps and Tricks for creating a sanctuary on piles of passion, and little else. 01.12.2023
Dearest Readers,
A pinch and a punch folks……summer is officially here! 🌞 And thankfully, we have nothing but glorious rain, consistent, deep watering, tank filling rain and I feel and I am sure the garden feels so much more ready for the hot and dry I’ve no doubt is hot on our tails. I write this, home for the first time in three weeks and busy in the garden, catching up, feeling as if the wetter, cooler change bought me some much needed time. I breathe a sigh of relief, along with the plants who must be thrilled to see coming armed with mulch to trap all that lovely moisture.
We do not have a lot of spare money, everything we made off Little Oak has been poured into Moorfield and with neither of us coming from much to begin with, working our butts off in our careers to do what we did, we are always looking for ways to maximise what we do, work smarter and ensure we aren’t wasting money, nor time, nor opportunities, even plants. It matters on a garden build this scale, lots of little savings make a huge difference in the end but this can be applied to any garden project and scaled or tweaked to suit, even if it only makes you think about a new approach to one thing you’re doing.
So, this journal is less fluff and more about frugality, and managing waste when building a garden. Surely two things that we are all honed on these days and especially, this close to Christmas where pressure to spend and excess in all things, is rife. Don’t get me wrong, if you saw my excessive Christmas Tree you’d know I dabble in the delight of this time of year too, I adore Xmas, especially with Nes but we are at the pointy end of finishing up two years of big ground work and we’re feeling it, even more so at this time of year, as many of you are.
So, on that note, thank you for being here, I know it is no small thing that you are. I cannot tell you what your support means for me personally, as a writer, garden maker, it is really more than I could ever say.
Pip and family xo
